A CLINICAL STUDY OF AUGMENTATION RHINOPLASTY

Abstract
Since the nose is in a prominent position in the central region Of the face and projects forward from it, it catches the eye Of the beholder first and foremost. Thus it is apparent why augmentation Of the nose is usually the most common procedure performed by the plastic surgeon. The concept Of what makes a face beautiful has varied through time and cultures producing a great diversity Of aesthetic standards. In Oriental philosophy, One¢¥s body is given by One¢¥s parents and changing the body contour is to commit a grave sin against One ¢¥s parents, Orientals are especially reluctant to have scars On the visible body surface. But mass media have reached into almost every corner Of the earth promoting the ¢¥Occidental¢¥ look and disrupting long established concepts Of beauty.
This study comprised 51 patients with flat nose in various degrees which were corrected by augmentation rhinoplasty for last 5 years.
The results were as follows
1. The age range was 18 to 56 years. Females predominated males, 16 to 1. 73% Of the total cases were females age 20 to 24.
2. The most common method Of surgical approach was midcOlumellar incisiOn(25 cases) followed by intercartilaginOus incision (15 cases), Rethi incision (10 cases), alar rim approach (1 case ), intraOral approach (1 case), and columellar base ( I case).
3. Among the materials for augmentation, medical grade silicone rubber was used in 40 cases, 32 Of which were straight form and 8 L-form. Autogenous bone graft was used in 7 cases, 6 from the ilium and One from the rib. Autogenous cartilage graft was used in 4 cases, all from the costal cartilage.
4. In ancillary surgery, there were 4 double eyelid operations, 2 mentOplasties,lcase Of scar revision and 1 case Of corrective rhinoplasty.
5. The mean increase Of the nasal angle Obtained by augmentation was 3.63 degrees in nasofacial angle, and 2.20 degrees in nasolabial angle.
6. Complications, developed in 8 cases, included lateral displacement of the implant(3 bending of transplanted cartilage(1 case). cases), hematoma(2 cases), infection(l case), absorption of the graft (1 case).
7. The mean thickness of the implant was 4.2=, and the range was 3 to 6-.
